Best Locker Materials for Wet and Humid Environments
Which locker materials survive wet, humid, and chemical environments: HDPE, phenolic, and stainless compared with lifecycle math.
Powder-coated steel lockers are the workhorse of dry corridor and break-room installations, but put them anywhere wet, humid, or chemical-exposed and they rust. For pools, locker rooms, food processing, breweries, healthcare, and any high-humidity industrial space, you need a non-corrosive locker. Three options matter: solid plastic (HDPE), phenolic core, and stainless steel.
Why steel fails in wet environments
Powder-coat is a paint film. Once it's chipped, scratched at hardware penetrations, or worn through at the latch and hinge, the underlying steel oxidizes. Rust then spreads under the paint film, lifts it, and cascades. In a chlorinated pool environment or a steamy team locker room, the failure is fast: rust shows at the first chips and spreads under the coating.
Galvanized steel and 'marine grade' powder-coat slow this down but don't stop it. The only way to win is to use a material that doesn't rust at all.
Solid plastic (HDPE): the value spec
High-density polyethylene is a solid plastic panel, color-through (no surface coating to chip).
- Cost: More than powder-coated steel, less than phenolic
- Lifespan: Long, with no coating to fail
- Pros:
- Will not rust, dent, or delaminate - Mold and mildew proof - Resists graffiti (cleans with solvent) - No painting or refinishing ever - Color through the panel, so scratches don't show
- Cons:
- Limited color range vs. powder-coat - Doesn't hold padlocks as securely as steel, so use built-in locks - Premium aesthetic limited
Best for: Pool decks, public locker rooms, fitness centers, school PE rooms, food processing, breweries, water parks, car washes.

Phenolic core: the premium spec
Phenolic core is paper or fabric layers impregnated with phenolic resin and compressed under heat. It is extremely dense, dimensionally stable, and takes hardware better than HDPE.
- Cost: More than HDPE
- Lifespan: Long, with no coating to fail
- Pros:
- All HDPE benefits (no rust, no paint) - Holds screws and hardware much better than HDPE (better for added shelves, hooks, accessories) - Better dimensional stability over wide temperature swings - Premium aesthetic with woodgrain and high-end color options - Excellent for engraving (player names, branding)
- Cons:
- More expensive than HDPE - Heavier (harder to install) - Longer lead times
Best for: College and pro athletic team rooms, country clubs, premium spas, executive locker rooms, high-end fitness, anywhere both moisture resistance and aesthetics matter.

Stainless steel: the niche premium
Stainless steel lockers (304 or 316 grade) are uncommon but used in specific high-end and high-hygiene applications.
- Cost: Highest of the four
- Lifespan: Long
- Pros:
- Won't rust (304 in normal environments, 316 in chlorinated/saline) - Premium modern aesthetic - Easy to sanitize for clean-room and food applications
- Cons:
- Most expensive - Shows fingerprints and scratches - Heavy (challenging install)
Best for: Pharmaceutical clean rooms, food/beverage clean rooms, high-end spa, medical / surgical staff.

Lifecycle cost in a pool
In a pool or team locker room, powder-coated steel is the cheapest locker to buy and the most expensive to keep: touch-up labor starts early, rusted doors and frames get replaced piece by piece, and the whole bank is replaced sooner. HDPE costs more on the purchase order and avoids most of that. Put both on the same quote and compare the gap with what the current lockers have cost you in repairs.
Other considerations for wet environments
- Ventilation: Diamond perforated, expanded metal, or louvered doors. Closed lockers in humid spaces grow mildew regardless of material.
- Floor mounting vs. legs: Lockers on legs dry faster and are easier to mop under. Mandatory for pool decks.
- Hardware: Even on plastic lockers, latches and hinges should be stainless or chrome-plated zinc, not plain steel.
- Bench spec: Phenolic, HDPE, or stainless benches, never wood (mildews) or steel (rusts).
- Drainage: Pool deck lockers should mount on an elevated base or feet to keep water from pooling under them.
