About Panic Exit Devices
Rim, surface vertical rod, concealed vertical rod, and mortise exit devices, Grade 1 commercial.
Panic exit devices (panic bars, crash bars) are required by the IBC on doors serving Group A (assembly) and Group E (educational) rooms or spaces with an occupant load of 50 or more, and on doors serving Group H occupancies at any load; NFPA 101 sets its threshold at 100 or more for assembly, educational, and day care occupancies. The adopted edition and the AHJ decide which applies. There are four standard configurations: rim, surface vertical rod (SVR), concealed vertical rod (CVR), and mortise. Each suits different door and frame conditions. We quote Grade 1 (ANSI/BHMA A156.3) devices from Von Duprin, Yale, and Dormakaba in all standard finishes and fire ratings.

Single-door egress = rim device, simplest. Paired doors with active and inactive leaves = SVR (surface) or CVR (concealed inside the door). CVR looks cleanest but costs more and is harder to service. Mortise is used where a deeper lock case is preferred for security or trim.
