About Fire Extinguisher Cabinets

Fire extinguisher cabinets protect the extinguisher from tampering and damage while keeping it visible and accessible. The mounting style choice (recessed, semi-recessed, or surface) depends on wall construction and ADA constraints. Surface-mount cabinets that project more than 4" from the wall when mounted between 27" and 80" AFF become an ADA head-strike hazard and must be replaced with recessed or semi-recessed equivalents. We quote the standard cabinets from JL Industries, Larsen's, and Potter Roemer in steel and aluminum, with clear acrylic, glass, or solid steel doors.

Fire Extinguisher Cabinets: common questions

Recessed gives a flush installation and no projection into the path of travel, but it needs a deep enough wall cavity, so it is a decision made during construction. Semi-recessed is the retrofit-friendly compromise. Surface-mount works on any wall, but it has to project no more than 4" where people walk. Mounting it higher is not a way around that: NFPA 10 puts the top of an extinguisher no more than 5 ft above the floor, well below the 80" where the ADA protrusion limit stops applying. Put a surface cabinet outside the circulation path, or recess it.
