Gym and Locker Room Package: Lockers, Wet Areas, and the ADA Fixtures That Go With Them
Lockers, benches, wet area accessories, and the restroom that opens off them, in one takeoff.
An athletic or municipal locker room is bought as one room: lockers, benches, hooks, a wet area, and the restroom off it. The buyers are GCs closing out a rec center or a school gym, and facility managers replacing a room that rusted out. This page lists the package line by line, says what sets each count, and quotes the 2010 ADA Standards where a fixture has a measured requirement. Material is the first decision, because every line in the room lives in humidity.

Lockers, by who uses them
Humidity decides the material. Powder coated steel belongs in dry corridors, because once the finish is chipped at a hinge or a latch the steel under it rusts. The wet zone takes a material that does not corrode, and ventilation matters as much as the door material, since uniforms have to dry inside the locker.

Benches, hooks, and the dry side
Section 803.4 puts a bench complying with Section 903 inside the accessible room, and Section 903.7 requires a seat surface that is slip resistant and does not accumulate water wherever a bench sits in a wet location. That rules out the plain wood bench on most aisles between the showers and the lockers.

Showers and drying areas
The shower is where an inspector takes measurements. Seat type follows the compartment type, and the grab bar layout follows the seat. Decide transfer, standard roll-in, or alternate roll-in before anything on this list is ordered, because all three change the fixture list.

The restroom off the locker room
Hose-down cleaning and standing humidity rule out materials that would pass in an office restroom. Compartment count comes from the plumbing fixture schedule, and the accessory schedule has to match the compartment material on finish.

What the code requires
Shower seat height, type, and extent
Section 610.3
Where a seat is provided in a standard roll-in shower compartment, it shall be a folding type, shall be installed on the side wall adjacent to the controls, and shall extend from the back wall to a point within 3 inches (75 mm) of the compartment entry. Where a seat is provided in an alternate roll-in type shower compartment, it shall be a folding type, shall be installed on the front wall opposite the back wall, and shall extend from the adjacent side wall to a point within 3 inches (75 mm) of the compartment entry. In transfer-type showers, the seat shall extend from the back wall to a point within 3 inches (75 mm) of the compartment entry. The top of the seat shall be 17 inches (430 mm) minimum and 19 inches (485 mm) maximum above the bathroom finish floor. Seats shall comply with 610.3.1 or 610.3.2 .Source
Grab bar height
Section 609.4
Grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position, 33 inches (840 mm) minimum and 36 inches (915 mm) maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface, except that at water closets for children’s use complying with 604.9 , grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position 18 inches (455 mm) minimum and 27 inches (685 mm) maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface. The height of the lower grab bar on the back wall of a bathtub shall comply with 607.4.1.1 or 607.4.2.1 .Source
Grab bars in a standard roll-in shower
Section 608.3.2
Where a seat is provided in standard roll-in type shower compartments, grab bars shall be provided on the back wall and the side wall opposite the seat. Grab bars shall not be provided above the seat. Where a seat is not provided in standard roll-in type shower compartments, grab bars shall be provided on three walls. Grab bars shall be installed 6 inches (150 mm) maximum from adjacent walls.Source

Benches shall have seats that are 42 inches (1065 mm) long minimum and 20 inches (510 mm) deep minimum and 24 inches (610 mm) deep maximum.Source
Coat hooks and shelves in a locker room
Section 803.5
Coat hooks provided within the room shall be located within one of the reach ranges specified in 308 . Shelves shall be 40 inches (1015 mm) minimum and 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground.Source

Gym Locker Room Package: common questions
Powder coated steel is a dry corridor material. Once the finish is chipped at a hinge, a latch, or a hardware penetration, the steel under it oxidizes, and chlorine and steam speed that up. Solid plastic and phenolic do not rust at all, which is why they carry pool decks, team rooms, and PE rooms. Phenolic holds hardware and engraving better, and solid plastic is the value spec. ADA Shower Seat Height and Size Requirements
Section 610.3 sets the top of an ADA shower seat at 17 to 19 in. above the bathroom finish floor. The seat must also match the rectangular or L-shaped dimensions in 610.3.1 or 610.3.2 and withstand a 250 pound force under 610.4.

Section 609.4 of the ADA Standards sets grab bars 33 to 36 in. above the finish floor, measured to the top of the gripping surface. Bars must be horizontal, and bars at water closets for children's use sit lower, at 18 to 27 in.
ViewADA Coat Hook Height and Reach Ranges
The ADA Standards give coat hooks no fixed height, only a reach range from 308 under Sections 603.4 and 604.8.3. With an unobstructed reach, that range is 15 in. minimum to 48 in. maximum above the finish floor.
