Surface Mounted vs Recessed vs Semi-Recessed Washroom Accessories: What Each One Needs From the Wall

Most washroom accessories are sold three ways: surface mounted, recessed, and semi-recessed. The unit dispenses the same towels in all three, so the decision belongs to the wall: the depth behind the finish face, how far the unit may stick out, and whether the wall is already built. We list 680 accessories across the three styles.

Surface mounted

A surface mounted unit needs a finished wall and anchors, nothing else, so it is the only realistic choice when the wall stays closed: most retrofits, tile, and block. What you pay for that is projection, and often money. ASI's 0457-9 surface mounted paper towel dispenser holds 350 C-fold or 500 multifold towels and is 4-1/4 in. deep. The recessed 0457 holds the same towels, needs a wall opening 11-1/4 in. by 15-3/4 in. by 4 in. deep, and we list it at $108.00 against $224.90 for the surface version, which adds a collar and a finished body. That gap is not a rule: ASI's recessed 0467 towel and waste cabinet is listed above its surface mounted 0467-9.

Recessed

A recessed unit needs a cavity at least as deep as the published wall opening, decided before the wall closes. The depths vary more than people expect:

• ASI 0031 twin hide-a-roll tissue dispenser: 6-1/4 in. by 12-1/4 in. by 3-3/8 in. deep
• ASI 0452 towel dispenser with a tumbler lock: 12-3/4 in. by 26-1/2 in. by 4 in. deep
• ASI 0467 towel dispenser and waste receptacle: 11-1/2 in. by 53-1/2 in. by 6-1/4 in. deep

The first two are ordinary framing. The third is a wall you have to plan. Depth is what kills a recessed spec late in a job, so read the opening on every unit before the studs go up, and check what else wants that cavity. The payoff is a flush face and almost nothing in the room.

Semi-recessed

Semi-recessed splits the difference, and ASI's 0458 waste receptacles show the range inside one model number: 4 in. of projection with 4 in. of recess on the 0458, 1/2 in. with 7-1/2 in. of recess on the 0458-CX, and 8 in. with 4 in. of recess on the 0458-DX, all into a 15-3/4 in. by 29 in. opening whose depth changes with the model. We list them at $256.20, $311.40, and $326.10.

Reach for it when the wall cannot give up the full depth, or to save money on a large cabinet: ASI's 0467-2 semi-recessed towel and waste combination unit needs a 4 in. deep opening against 6-1/4 in. for the recessed 0467, and we list it at $655.80, below both other mountings in that family. What the ADA allows to stick out

This is the reason recessed exists. Section 307.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards, Protrusion Limits, reads: "Objects with leading edges more than 27 inches (685 mm) and not more than 80 inches (2030 mm) above the finish floor or ground shall protrude 4 inches (100 mm) maximum horizontally into the circulation path." Section 307.5 adds: "Protruding objects shall not reduce the clear width required for accessible routes." Section 204.1 pulls a restroom wall into it: "Protruding objects on circulation paths shall comply with 307."

So read two numbers: the height of the lowest leading edge, and the depth at its farthest point. Above 27 in. and up to 80 in., on a path, 4 in. is the cap.

That line is easier to cross than it looks. ASI's 0457-9 is 4-1/4 in. deep. ASI lists it as ADA compliant, and protrusion is a separate question about where it goes: on a circulation path with its lower edge above 27 in. it is past the cap, and the recessed 0457 is the unit to buy. Hand dryers run the same way: ASI's surface mounted Turbo-ADA is 4 in. deep, while the recessed Turbo-Tuff takes a 3-7/8 in. opening. Bradley states it outright, listing its recessed Diplomat 4A20 vendor at 1-3/4 in. of projection and the surface mounted 4A20-11 at 5-3/4 in.

Stud, block, and tile

The wall type decides how the opening gets made. ASI ships different hardware for the same recessed soap dish: the 0398-D with a stud wall clamp, the 0399 with stud and cement wall kits, and the 0401, whose page states it "Includes kit for installing in cement wall". All three drop into a 6-1/8 in. by 4-1/8 in. by 4 in. opening.

• Stud and drywall. Frame the opening and keep blocking clear of the cabinet depth.
• Block or poured concrete. The opening is formed or saw cut, which makes recessing a new construction decision, not a change order.
• Tile and stone. Set the opening out before the tile is laid. Cutting finished tile means replacing tile.

Vandal resistance

Recessed wins on abuse: all that is exposed is a door face and a lock. Surface units can be armored instead: ASI sells a 14 gauge vandal resistant hood for its 0264-1 double roll tissue holder, which we list at $133.00. In schools and transit work: recess what the wall takes, lock it, hood the rest.

What to spec

• Occupied building, wall stays closed. Surface mounted, checked against the 4 in. limit on any circulation path.
• New construction or gut remodel on stud walls. Recessed for corridors, alcoves, and tight restrooms, with wall openings in the schedule, not just model numbers.
• Block walls, shaft walls, or plumbing behind the wall. Semi-recessed, checking the collar options first.
• Heavy abuse. Recess and lock, then armor what stays on the surface. If the wall type is still unknown, order surface mounted: it is the one that always installs.
