A school restroom is one schedule with four buyouts inside it: compartments, washroom accessories, life safety, and the storage in the corridor outside the door. This page lists the lines a K-12 or university restroom needs, what sets each count, and where the children's dimensions in Section 604.9 change the numbers. Work down it to build a fixture and accessory schedule, or send the Division 10 spec sections and a compartment count and we will quote against them.

Toilet compartments
Material first, then the accessible compartments, then hardware. The fixture count sets how many accessible compartments you owe, not the size of the room.

Elementary restrooms on the children's dimensions
Where the architect uses the children's exception, four lines change. Advisory 604.9 asks that one age group be applied consistently across the water closet and everything around it, so get the age group in writing before you order.

Life safety, egress, and the science wing
These lines sit outside the restroom and land on the same buyout, and they are the ones an inspector walks first.

Corridor and locker room storage
Lockers are counted off the corridor elevation, door by door, and the material is decided by how wet the room gets.

Division 10 puts the janitor closet on the same accessory schedule as the restrooms, and it is the section most schedules leave blank.

What the code requires
How many accessible compartments a restroom owes
Section 213.3.1
Where toilet compartments are provided, at least one toilet compartment shall comply with 604.8.1 . In addition to the compartment required to comply with 604.8.1 , at least one compartment shall comply with 604.8.2 where six or more toilet compartments are provided, or where the combination of urinals and water closets totals six or more fixtures.

Section 604.8.1.1
Wheelchair accessible compartments shall be 60 inches (1525 mm) wide minimum measured perpendicular to the side wall, and 56 inches (1420 mm) deep minimum for wall hung water closets and 59 inches (1500 mm) deep minimum for floor mounted water closets measured perpendicular to the rear wall. Wheelchair accessible compartments for children’s use shall be 60 inches (1525 mm) wide minimum measured perpendicular to the side wall, and 59 inches (1500 mm) deep minimum for wall hung and floor mounted water closets measured perpendicular to the rear wall.

Grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position, 33 inches (840 mm) minimum and 36 inches (915 mm) maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface, except that at water closets for children’s use complying with 604.9 , grab bars shall be installed in a horizontal position 18 inches (455 mm) minimum and 27 inches (685 mm) maximum above the finish floor measured to the top of the gripping surface. The height of the lower grab bar on the back wall of a bathtub shall comply with 607.4.1.1 or 607.4.2.1 .

Section 604.9
The requirements in 604.9 are to be followed where the exception for children’s water closets in 604.1 is used. The following table provides additional guidance in applying the specifications for water closets for children according to the age group served and reflects the differences in the size, stature, and reach ranges of children ages 3 through 12. The specifications chosen should correspond to the age of the primary user group. The specifications of one age group should be applied consistently in the installation of a water closet and related elements.

Section 604.9.6
Toilet paper dispensers shall comply with 309.4 and shall be 7 inches (180 mm) minimum and 9 inches (230 mm) maximum in front of the water closet measured to the centerline of the dispenser. The outlet of the dispenser shall be 14 inches (355 mm) minimum and 19 inches (485 mm) maximum above the finish floor. There shall be a clearance of 1½ inches (38 mm) minimum below the grab bar. Dispensers shall not be of a type that controls delivery or that does not allow continuous paper flow.

Objects with leading edges more than 27 inches (685 mm) and not more than 80 inches (2030 mm) above the finish floor or ground shall protrude 4 inches (100 mm) maximum horizontally into the circulation path.

School Restroom Package: common questions
Solid plastic (HDPE) for most K-12 restrooms, because the color runs through the panel, so carving and marker can be sanded and scrubbed out and the panel stays in service. Phenolic is the step up for high schools and universities that want a finished face and stronger hardware mounting. Powder coated steel is the economical choice for dry staff and administrative restrooms, where a scratch can be touched up instead of replaced.
