Locker Sizes and Dimensions: Single, Double, Triple, and Box Tier Charts

Standard locker widths, depths, and opening heights for single, double, triple, and box tiers as each manufacturer publishes them, with the ADA reach and bench rules and the CSI 10 51 sections.

Updated September 25, 2026

A locker schedule needs four numbers before anyone can price it: width, depth, the height of the frame, and the height of each door opening, which is what the tier count sets. Across the standard steel lines from Penco, Lyon, Republic, and List, and the phenolic and solid plastic Traditional collections from ASI Storage Solutions, those numbers fall on the same short list: 12, 15, or 18 in. wide, 12 to 24 in. deep, and a 60 or 72 in. frame, with legs or a base added under it. This page lists what each manufacturer publishes, tier by tier, and then what to put on a quote.

The four numbers, and what legs add

Width is the outside width of one frame; Penco's catalog defines it as "the nominal outside dimension for 1 frame." Depth is front to back. Height is where schedules go wrong, because one locker has three of them: the frame, the door opening, and the overall height once legs or a base are under it.

Penco states the convention: "Overall Height is the overall height of the locker frame, NOT including legs. Opening Height is the nominal height of the individual door opening." Its Vanguard, Guardian, and Invincible II lines sit on 60 or 72 in. frames, and "6 inch legs are standard and can be deleted as a no cost option." Republic's size table lists nominal door heights and says to add 6 in. to the overall height when legs are included. Lyon's product tables give both figures for its in-stock standard steel lockers: a 60 in. frame is 66 in. overall on its 6 in. legs and a 72 in. frame is 78 in., and its specification sheet says free-standing lockers are furnished with 6 in. legs, with front and end closed bases optional. Welded lines differ. Penco's Welded Gen2 ships flat top without legs, with a 4 in. channel base as an option, and List's Classmate corridor lockers are all-welded onto an integral 16 gauge base. ASI Storage's solid plastic lockers use a separate HDPE base of 1 in. nominal thickness.

A single tier opening equals the frame height. For every other tier the frame is divided, so on a Penco 72 in. frame a double tier opening is 36 in., triple tier 24 in., four tier 18 in., and six tier 12 in. Write the frame height and the leg or base height as two lines on the schedule, so the installed height is never in doubt.

Republic draws the handle line at four tiers: single, double, and triple tier doors carry a recessed handle, and four, five, and six tier doors a steel pull handle. Penco draws it one tier earlier, with a door pull on its 3 to 6 tier Vanguard box lockers. Below a full tier there are half-height units: Penco's Vanguard comes 30-1/2, 36-1/2, and 48-1/2 in. high at 12 in. wide and 12, 15, or 18 in. deep, its Welded Gen2 single tier has 36.5 and 48.5 in. openings, and Republic's 36 and 48 in. single tier doors are in the table. Two-person and Z-style units split one frame between two users: Penco's Guardian two-person locker has 52 in. openings on a 72 in. frame, List's Classmate has a Z-Style, and ASI Storage lists a two-person Z in phenolic and plastic.

Which size for the job

School corridor

Republic's corridor line is designed to be recessed into the wall, which it says keeps hallways as wide as possible for foot traffic, and its triple and four tier lockers come only 12 in. wide. Penco names Vanguard as its school corridor and employee locker; the single tier includes a shelf, and a coat rod at 18 in. deep and deeper. List's Classmate corridor locker is all-welded with 14 gauge louvered doors standard. What hangs inside depends on the opening: List equips a 60 or 72 in. single tier opening with a hat shelf, a double prong ceiling hook, and two single prong hooks, a 30 to 36 in. double tier opening with the hooks and no shelf, and a 20 to 24 in. triple tier opening with one double prong hook. Republic draws the line lower: openings under 20 in. high get no hooks at all, so a box locker holds a bag, not a hanging coat. For a full school package, a 12 x 15 in. double tier on a 72 in. frame gives every student a 36 in. opening with hooks.

Gym and athletic

List sells three athletic tiers by use: Varsity single tier is "highly recommended for varsity team rooms", Jr. Varsity double tier is "ideal when budget or space limitations apply" and works "in team rooms as well as in P.E.", and Intramural triple tier is "ideal when space and/or funds are limited", with an opening tall enough for clothing to hang on hooks and dry. Diamond perforated doors are standard on that line, widths run to 24 in., and depths to 22 in. Penco's Invincible II is its athletic locker, 14 gauge doors with diamond perforations in doors and sides, for applications "that require a high degree of ventilation and strength, or where visual inspection of locker contents is desired". Penco's Vanguard 7 and 8 person lockers pair 18 x 12 in. box compartments for gear with an 18 in. wide, 60 in. high opening for street clothes, which Penco calls ideal for school gymnasium locker rooms. Lyon's collegiate athletic locker is 24 in. wide and 72 in. high in 18, 21, or 24 in. depths, for bulky gear. A wet room pushes the material toward phenolic or HDPE: ASI Storage places its phenolic Traditional collection in health clubs, country clubs, and executive washrooms and its solid plastic line in high-humidity applications, in the same 60 or 72 in. heights and 12 to 18 in. widths as steel. The wet environments guide covers the choice, and the gym locker room package is a full takeoff.

Employee break room

Penco's Guardian is its office and break room locker: a flush door with no exposed louvers, with air slots in the top and bottom door flanges instead, in single, double, and triple tier plus the two-person version. Its 16 person Vanguard unit, 69 x 18 x 72 in. with a 45 in. coat rod, is listed for employee lockers, and its dual locker, one opening split into a street clothes side and a work clothes side, is generally used at 15 or 18 in. wide and 18 or 21 in. deep. For day use with nothing to hang, the five and six tier box lockers with 12 in. openings put the most doors on a foot of wall; Republic lists the same standard line for office locker rooms, and ASI Storage labels its solid plastic Traditional collection for day use.

12 in. wide or 15 in. wide

Every line above makes single and double tier in both widths, so the difference shows up in three places. The narrow tiers: Republic's triple and four tier and Lyon's in-stock triple, four, and six tier stop at 12 in. The door: Penco makes doors under 12 in. wide in 18 gauge and 12 in. and wider in 16 gauge, and adds a full height reinforcing pan to doors over 15 in. wide on 60 and 72 in. frames; Lyon's box locker doors up to 15 x 15 in. are 18 gauge. The contents: Penco's two-compartment dual lockers start at 15 in. wide and 18 in. deep, and a coat rod needs 18 in. of depth at Penco and 18 or 21 in. at Lyon. So specify 15 in. when a garment hangs on a rod or two things must sit side by side, and 12 in. when the count per wall matters and the tier is triple or box, the width those tiers are made in.

Accessibility: which door a seated user can reach

The 2010 ADA Standards set the count in 225.2.1: "Where lockers are provided, at least 5 percent, but no fewer than one of each type, shall comply with 811 ." Count each tier and size on the schedule as a type, and confirm the reading with the authority having jurisdiction. The reach is 308.2.1: "Where a forward reach is unobstructed, the high forward reach shall be 48 inches (1220 mm) maximum and the low forward reach shall be 15 inches (380 mm) minimum above the finish floor or ground." The handle is 309.4: "Operable parts shall be operable with one hand and shall not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. The force required to activate operable parts shall be 5 pounds (22.2 N) maximum."

On a stack, the handle, the hooks, and the shelf all have to land between those two heights. The top door of a six tier stack on legs opens above the high reach and the floor of its bottom box sits below the low reach, which is why the manufacturers' own ADA guidance names single tier and the lower opening of a double tier, not box lockers. Penco says the lockers commonly accepted for ADA assignment are "single tier and double-tier (lower tier only)" with the Classic III recessed handle, that a 36 in. lower opening of a two tier may be designated, and that an extra shelf should be ordered to bring the lowest reach point within range; its specifications put the single tier hat shelf 48 in. from the locker bottom and the double tier shelf 15 in. off the floor. ASI Storage's solid plastic specification says the same: single tier or the lower opening of a double tier, the locker bottom or an extra shelf 15 in. off the floor, a shelf 48 in. off the floor in single tier, a sign on the door, and a single touch latch.

The room needs a bench too. 222.1 scopes the rooms: "Where dressing rooms, fitting rooms, or locker rooms are provided, at least 5 percent, but no fewer than one, of each type of use in each cluster provided shall comply with 803 ." 803.4 puts the bench in it: "A bench complying with 903 shall be provided within the room." And 903.5 sets the seat: "The top of the bench seat surface shall be 17 inches (430 mm) minimum and 19 inches (485 mm) maximum above the finish floor or ground." Penco's stainless steel bench pedestal is 16-1/4 in. high, for an overall bench height of 17-1/2 in. under its 1-1/4 in. hardwood top. Seat length, depth, back support, and clear floor space are on the ADA locker room bench height page.

Manufacturers file at the section level: List's Classmate specification is written as Section 10 51 13, Metal Student Lockers, while Republic's standard locker specification still carries an older five digit heading, 10500 Metal Lockers, so put the 2018 number on the submittal yourself. The rest of the division is in the Division 10 CSI codes guide.

What to send with a quote request

A locker schedule prices in one pass when it carries these lines for each run:

  1. Quantity by run: openings and frames, and whether the run is 1-wide or 3-wide frames (Penco and Lyon sell both groupings).
  2. Tier and opening height, from the first table.
  3. Width x depth x frame height, with legs or base on its own line: 6 in. legs, a 4 or 6 in. Zee base (Penco offers both in 14 gauge), closed front and end bases, or no legs for a recessed or welded run.
  4. Material: steel, HDPE, or phenolic, and for steel the door gauge, 16 standard or 14 heavy (Penco Guardian Plus and Invincible II, List Classmate).
  5. Color, and whether the body matches: Penco's Vanguard and Guardian body parts come in 073 Champagne as standard with full color at extra cost, and List offers two-tone at no additional cost.
  6. Lock type: padlock hasp, built-in combination, or built-in key; Penco doors are punched for either.
  7. Tops: flat, unit slope tops (Penco's rise one third of the depth), or a continuous slope hood (List's is about 18 degrees).
  8. End panels, fillers, and recess trim: boxed 16 gauge end panels on exposed ends, fillers at walls, and trim for a recessed run (Lyon's has a 2-3/4 in. face, Penco's 3 in.).
  9. ADA count and location: 5 percent and no fewer than one of each type, as single tier or lower double tier openings with the extra shelf.
  10. Benches: length and pedestal height, so the seat lands at 17 to 19 in.

Send it through the quote form with the room drawing if you have one. Welded runs ship in groups, Penco's usually 54 in. wide at up to 18 in. deep and 48 in. wide beyond that, so the door and corridor route matters on the drawing too.
