Recessed and Semi-Recessed Waste Receptacles

A recessed waste receptacle mounts inside a framed wall opening and sits flush; a semi-recessed one needs a shallower cavity and projects a few inches into the room. Architects and facility managers specify them for new construction, where the framing is planned before drywall. They also fit any restroom where a wall-hung bin would crowd the circulation path.

Start from the wall cavity. Where it is deep enough, a fully recessed unit such as the Bradley 3A05-000000 (recessed, 12 gal.) sits flush. Where it is shallow, the semi-recessed Bradley 3A05-100000 (12 gal.) or the ASI 0458 (4 in. projection, 4 in. recess, 12 gallons) is the compromise. ASI's 0458-CX trims projection to 1/2 in. with a 7-1/2 in. recess. Projection matters because of the 2010 ADA Standards. Objects with a front edge between 27 in. and 80 in. above the finish floor may protrude 4 in. maximum into the circulation path (Section 307.2). For a single-occupant restroom or an exam room, the Bradley 3251-000000 is a recessed 2.8 gal. receptacle with a push flap door.
