Heights above the finish floor, drawn to scale. Grab bar top, side and rear walls: 33 to 36 in. above the finish floor (ADA 609.4). Door latch, lock, and pulls: 34 to 48 in. above the finish floor (ADA 404.2.7). Shelf inside the compartment: 40 to 48 in. above the finish floor (ADA 604.8.3).

How to measure the compartment

Width is measured perpendicular to the side wall, the wall or partition the water closet sits beside. Depth is measured perpendicular to the rear wall. Both readings run from the finished face of the wall or partition, not from a pilaster or the door, and the compartment has to clear 60 in. one way and 56 or 59 in. the other.

The depth depends on the fixture. A wall hung water closet allows 56 in.; a floor mounted water closet needs 59 in. Compartments for children's use are 60 in. wide and 59 in. deep whichever type is installed.

Section 604.3.2 lets the clearance around the water closet overlap the grab bars, dispensers, sanitary napkin disposal, coat hooks, and shelves. Any other fixture or obstruction has to stay out of it, so a trash can or a floor-standing unit cannot share the stall.

Door location, swing, and hardware

Section 604.8.1.2 gives the door two possible places. In the front partition, the opening sits 4 in. maximum from the side wall or partition farthest from the water closet. In that far side partition, the opening sits 4 in. maximum from the front partition. Either way the door lands diagonally opposite the water closet, which keeps the transfer side open.

The door must be self-closing, must carry a pull on both sides near the latch, and may not swing into the minimum required compartment area. Under 404.2.3 the clear opening is 32 in. minimum, measured between the face of the door and the stop with the door open 90 degrees. Under 404.2.7 the latch, lock, and pulls sit 34 to 48 in. above the floor and work with one hand.

When the approach outside the stall is to the latch side of the door, 604.8.1.2 asks for 42 in. minimum between the door side of the compartment and any obstruction. That figure replaces the latch side clearance of Section 404 for compartment doors; the rest of 404 still applies.

Toe clearance under the partitions

Section 604.8.1.4 requires the front partition and at least one side partition to clear the floor by 9 in. minimum, and that space must continue 6 in. minimum beyond the compartment-side face of the partition. Partition support members are excluded, so pilasters do not count against it, but a panel or door that runs to the floor does.

Compartments for children's use raise the figure to 12 in. above the finish floor. The requirement is waived at the front partition of a compartment deeper than 62 in. with a wall hung water closet or 65 in. with a floor mounted one, and at a side partition of a compartment wider than 66 in. Full-height doors and panels are an option on an oversized stall; on a minimum-size stall they are not.

Grab bars, hooks, and shelves inside the stall

Section 604.8.1.5 calls for two grab bars. The side wall bar goes on the wall closest to the water closet: 42 in. long minimum, starting 12 in. maximum from the rear wall and reaching 54 in. minimum from it (604.5.1). The rear wall bar is 36 in. long minimum and extends 12 in. minimum from the water closet centerline on the wall side and 24 in. minimum on the open side (604.5.2).

Both bars mount horizontally with the top of the gripping surface 33 to 36 in. above the finish floor, or 18 to 27 in. at water closets for children's use, under 609.4. Coat hooks must fall within a reach range from Section 308, and a shelf sits 40 to 48 in. above the floor (604.8.3). Toilet paper dispensers have their own placement rules in 604.7, covered on the dispenser page.
