ASI Grab Bars

ASI grab bars here are straight stainless steel bars in the 3701 and 3801 series, in lengths of 18, 24, 36, 42, and 48 in. Peened versions carry a P suffix, such as the 3701-42P, and add a textured gripping surface for slip resistance when wet. For a darker palette, the 3801-36-41 is a matte black powder coated stainless steel bar with a snap flange and a 1-1/2 in. diameter. Matching matte black bars come in 18 and 42 in. lengths. Contractors, architects, and facility managers use these bars to fill the grab bar lines on an accessory schedule, from toilet compartments to showers.

An inspector checks each bar's diameter, height, and mounting against the ADA rules. ADA 609.4 sets the top of the gripping surface 33 to 36 in. above the finish floor. Section 609.3 requires 1-1/2 in. of space between bar and wall. Section 609.2.1 allows a circular bar 1-1/4 to 2 in. in outside diameter. Under 609.8, a 250 pound force at any point cannot overstress the bar, fastener, mounting device, or supporting structure. Plan solid blocking before the wall closes. Peened models such as the 3801-36P give wet hands a surer grip in showers and tub surrounds.
